Sodium Bentonite

SODIUM BENTONITE

Sodium BentoniteSodium Bentonite can be used as a fining agent for use in wines and ciders. Simply mix with hot water before adding to juice or wine, following the instructions on the label.

What is bentonite?

Bentonite is a naturally occurring clay that forms over millions of years from the weathering of volcanic ash. It is widely considered the “clay of a thousand uses” because of its unique ability to absorb water and bind with other substances. Scientifically, it is primarily composed of montmorillonite, a mineral that gives the clay its signature “swelling” and “sticky” properties.

Why Choose Sodium Bentonite?

Unlike calcium-based alternatives, sodium bentonite offers a superior swelling capacity and a high negative surface charge. This makes it an incredibly efficient “magnet” for positively charged proteins that cause unwanted cloudiness or “protein haze” after bottling.

Superior Protein Removal: Aggressively binds to heat-unstable proteins, ensuring your wine stays crystal clear even in fluctuating temperatures.
Rapid Settling: Forms compact lees, minimizing wine loss during racking and improving overall yield.
Neutral Sensory Impact: Gently clarifies without stripping away the delicate aromatics or the unique character of your varietal.
Versatile Application: Effective during fermentation or as a post-fermentation polishing agent.

How to Achieve the Best Results

To maximize the efficacy of sodium bentonite, it must be properly hydrated before addition. Mixing the powder into hot water (approx. 60°C) creates a smooth slurry that increases the available surface area, ensuring every gram works to its full potential.
